Ask Curtis: Who Pays for Senior Care

Dear Curtis,

This is a follow-up to a previous question regarding the costs of an assisted living facility. Who exactly pays the bill for an assisted living resident?

Financially Challenged

Dear Financially Challenged:

Residents or their families generally pay the cost of care from their own financial resources. Some will use the proceeds from the sale of a home to pay for their living arrangements. Other use savings, retirement or pension funds, while others receive financial assistance from family members. Depending on the nature of an individual’s health insurance program or long-term care insurance policy, costs may be reimbursed. In addition, some residents have their own financial assistance programs. Government payments for assisted living residents have been limited. Some state and local governments offer subsidiaries for rent or services for low income elders. Others may provide subsidies in the form of an additional payment for those who receive Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid. Some states also utilize Medicaid waiver programs to help pay for assisted living services. There are also VA Benefits if residents qualify.
